Description:

This presentation will provide a brief background on trauma and an overview of trauma informed care principles within the school system. In particular, this presentation will highlight trauma related to school shootings and occupational therapy’s role in addressing school shooting trauma.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this presentation, learners will be able to:

  • Determine the way trauma impacts the nervous system
  • Identify areas of associated impairments due to complex trauma
  • Identify key intervention strategies and ways to support dysregulated students
  • Define School Shooting & different aspects of school shooting exposures
  • Define and explain occupational impact of school shootings and needs of the population
  • State and be able to elaborate on components of an evaluation for children experiencing trauma in the schools
  • Identify trauma informed care principles
  • Identify and navigate resources for school shooting and general trauma in the schools
